About Us

In the heart of Espanola, Ontario, a dedicated board of volunteers breathed life into the Nagweyaabiin Friendship Centre in June 2022.  "Nagweyaabiin" - an Ojibwe term which translates to "Rainbow Country" - encapsulates our vision.  Although we are in our foundational phase with limited resources, we are fueled by sheer commitment.  Currently, our offerings include drum socials, potluck dinners, and enriching verbal Indigenous teachings.  Our ambitions soar high, with plans to introduce an expansive range of cultural and supportive services in the foreseeable future.

It's pivotal to note that Espanola acts as a central nexus for eight First Nations communities.  For seven of these, Espanola provides the exclusive highway access to essential resources.

While we gained incorporated status as an independent non-profit during the summer of 2022, the Nagweyaabiin Friendship Centre operates distinctively, unaffiliated with Mamaweswen: The North Shore Tribal Council (NSTC), United Chiefs and Council of Mnidoo Mnising (U.C.C.M.), or any First Nations.  Our momentum is sustained through volunteering, fundraising, and the generosity of donations.

The presence of the Nagweyaabiin Friendship Centre becomes paramount considering Espanola's Indigenous population, which exceeds 500, complemented by the 6,000+ residents from the eight surrounding First Nations communities who call the reserves home.  (These numbers are officially verified by Census Canada).

At Nagweyaabiin Friendship Centre, we envision a harmonious melding of time-honored cultural traditions with the dynamics of modern urban living.  We aim to curate a sanctuary for Indigenous individuals and families.  Our ethos revolves around celebrating and preserving the intricate tapestry of Indigenous cultures in an urban landscape.  Anchored in our mission, we aspire to nurture an environment where Indigenous communities can effortlessly access services, partake in cultural programs, and forge lasting bonds and meaningful connections.
